The ODTx Solution
A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Ophthalmic Drug Delivery
To change the way sight-threatening diseases are treated, an
ocular drug delivery system must be efficacious, convenient, and
safe - and that's what the On Demand Therapeutic (ODTx™) solution
is designed to be. The biocompatible, non-bioerodible ODTx implant
is comprised of multiple, sealed reservoirs containing individual
doses of drugs to treat retinal diseases. Every reservoir is
designed to safely store and maintain the stability of small or
large molecule drugs in the eye until an ophthalmologist initiates
drug release from one or multiple reservoirs with a laser. By
allowing this precise control, ODTx is able to fulfill the unmet
need for sustainable and interactive therapies that effectively
treat severe retinal diseases.

The ODTx Procedure

The ODTx procedure begins with the injection of the device into
the periphery of the vitreous in the region of the pars plana using
a standard intravitreal injection technique. When the
ophthalmologist decides to release the drug, he/she uses a slit
lamp and mirrored lens to locate the ODTx implant and focuses a
laser beam on the selected reservoir. When the laser energy hits
the selected reservoir, an opening is created that allows the drug
contained inside the reservoir to elute into the vitreous and
diffuse to the retina. The un-activated reservoirs remain intact
and enable the ophthalmologist to release drugs from the additional
reservoirs via the same non-invasive process "as needed" during
subsequent visits.
The ODTx Benefits

Current drug therapy for retinal disease involves forcing
patients to endure monthly intravitreal injections. The ODTx device
is designed to provide drug therapy for an extended duration of a
year or more. After the initial insertion, follow-up visits involve
the non-invasive activation of specific reservoirs with a laser to
deliver doses of drug to the patient. ODTx's sealed reservoirs and
laser-activation mechanism provide an effective way to deliver
protein and other drugs. Other delivery technologies (i.e.,
bioerodible polymers, pumps, microspheres, screws, drops, etc.)
have difficulty delivering such drugs due to issues like drug
formulation instability, materials compatibility, and transport
limitations. As a result, the ODTx device is more versatile and
broadly applicable than any other ocular delivery technology
available today.
In addition to the numerous benefits that ODTx technology
provides patients, it also provides advantages for ophthalmologists
and the ophthalmic therapeutic industry. The ODTx device allows a
precise, physician-controlled drug delivery procedure that reduces
treatment burdens, enables concomitant therapies, and creates
product differentiation through delivery.
