Gil Kliman, MD -- Managing Director: Life Sciences,
InterWest Partners
Gil Kliman, MD, is a Managing Director of InterWest
Partners, a leading diversified venture capital firm. At InterWest,
he focuses on life sciences investing with a special interest in
medical devices and ophthalmology. He is a lead investor and board
member for a broad portfolio of InterWest life sciences companies,
including Glaukos, LenSx, On Demand Therapeutics, ReVision Optics,
Epocrates, and Restoration Robotics. He was one of the early lead
investors in IntraLase (ILSE), an ophthalmic laser company that
completed a highly successful IPO in 2004 and was acquired by AMO
in 2007 for $808 million.
Prior to InterWest Partners, Dr. Kliman was a healthcare
investor at TA Associates and at Norwest Venture Capital. As a
former practicing ophthalmologist he was the West Coast Director of
LCA Vision, and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts New
England Eye Center. Dr. Kliman did a retina fellowship at
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary as a Heed Fellow where he
conducted and published the first studies of photodynamic therapy
for macular degeneration. He completed his ophthalmology residency
at Wills Eye Hospital, and holds an MD from the University of
Pennsylvania, an MBA from Stanford, and a BA from Harvard.
David Weber, PhD
Dr. Weber has broad experience in business and
healthcare product development, including over a decade as the
chief executive officer of companies developing locally delivered
therapeutics. He currently serves as president and CEO of Otonomy,
a developer of therapeutics for diseases and disorders of the inner
and middle ear. Previously, Dr. Weber was CEO of MacuSight, a
developer of a sustained delivery formulation of sirolimus for the
treatment of severe ocular diseases. In this role, he successfully
secured venture financing, licensed product rights in Asia in a
deal with $50 million in upfront payments, and rapidly advanced the
program into pivotal Phase 2 clinical trials. Dr. Weber also serves
on the board of directors of Otonomy and Sytera Therapeutics.
Prior to MacuSight, Dr. Weber served as CEO and executive vice
president of Oculex Pharmaceuticals, leading the company until its
successful acquisition by Allergan in 2003 for $230 million. During
his tenure, he oversaw the development of Posurdex
(Ozurdex®), a proprietary, biodegradable,
sustained-release ocular implant which has since received
regulatory approval in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Weber also held
senior management positions in healthcare product development at
Oral-B Laboratories and The Procter & Gamble Company. He
received his PhD in medical microbiology from Creighton University
and his master's and bachelor's degrees in biological sciences from
Wichita State University.
John T. Santini, Jr., PhD -- President & CEO
Dr. John Santini is a life science executive,
entrepreneur, and scientist that has spent his career focused on
the creation and growth of businesses developing advanced drug
delivery and biosensor products. As President & CEO of On
Demand Therapeutics, Inc. (ODTx), Dr. Santini is leading the
development of a physician controlled drug therapy product for the
treatment of retinal diseases such as wet age-related macular
degeneration.
Prior to ODTx, he led the development of wireless, implantable
drug delivery and biosensor devices as President & CEO of
MicroCHIPS, Inc. Dr. Santini is a recognized expert in the
application of microtechnology in healthcare and has over 100
patents and patent applications. He has been honored as one of
Popular Science Magazine's "Brilliant Ten" and one of the Top 100
Young Innovators in the world by Technology Review Magazine, and
his work resulted in a Technology Pioneer award from the World
Economic Forum (Davos, Switzerland) and a Gold Medal from the
Edison Awards in the Science and Medical, Game Changers category.
Dr. Santini obtained his PhD in chemical engineering from MIT as a
National Science Foundation Fellow and his BSE in chemical
engineering from the University of Michigan.
